Last minute… Russia’s flash call to U.S.: We urge you to avoid stupidity

Reacting strongly to allegations that the United States would deploy THAAD anti-ballistic missiles in Ukraine, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Pankin said, ‘We urge the Americans not to do stupid things.’

The eyes of the world have been on the Russian-Ukrainian border for weeks. While many steps have been taken to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis, there has been a stern warning from Russia.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the delivery of US THAAD anti-ballistic missile systems to Ukraine would reduce the chances of finding a political solution to the crisis.

Ryabkov added that Moscow is urging it to refrain from any ‘stupidity’ in this regard.

Ryabkov stressed that the Kremlin takes seriously its U.S. counter-proposals for military exercises and de-escalation, but wants to understand whether Russia is ready for serious talks on whether Washington should expand NATO.

Ryabkov also stressed that negotiations on security guarantees depend on the US being ready to discuss the issue.
