Sidney Poitier, the first black actor to win a best actor Oscar, has died at the age of 94.

Hollywood star Sidney Poitier, the first black actor to win a best Actor Oscar,has reportedly died at the age of 94. Originally from the Bahamas and born in Miami, USA in 1927, Poitier won an Oscar for best actor in 1963 for Lilies in the Field after being nominated for an Oscar for The Defiant Ones in 1958.

Denzel Washington, the second black actor to win best actor for 2001’s Training Day, praised Poitier as he accepted the award, saying, “I will always be after you, Sidney. I’ll always follow in your footsteps. There’s nothing else I’d rather do, sir.” At the same ceremony, Poitier received an Honorary Academy Award for his contributions to U.S. cinema.

Poitier served as ambassador to Japan in the Bahamas from 1997 to 2007, and in 2009 was awarded the “Presidential Order of Freedom”, the highest civilian medal of honor, by former U.S. President Barrack Obama for his contributions to humanity.

Following the death of Ernest Borgnine, Poitier was named the oldest living actor as of 2012.
