A Chinese citizen in the U.S. has been convicted of “economic espionage.”

A Chinese citizen in the United States has been convicted of economic espionage on behalf of his country by stealing trade secrets.

The Northern District Court of California found Hao Zhang, 41, guilty three times of stealing information under industrial property rights from two American companies. The decision said the information stolen from Skyworks Solutions and Avago Technologies relates to technologies that allow mobile phones to filter out unwanted signals other than network signals.

After graduating from the University of Southern California, he was recorded as carrying out espionage activities aimed at obtaining trade secrets at companies where he applied for jobs.

Hao Zhang, who has been on trial for five years on the charges, will be sentenced at a hearing on August 31. He is expected to face 10 to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Allegations that China is actively engaged in espionage in the United States to obtain trade secrets in the field of technology have played a role in the start of a trade war between the two countries in recent years. The Chinese government denies the allegations.
